Segment Description

Hans Christian Orsted discovered that an electric current will generate an electric field. Michael Faraday made discoveries that led to the invention of the electric motor. Electric power plants today use generators, which are coils of wire with a rotating magnet inside. Steam is used to turn the blades of turbines, which are attached to the generators. Most power plants burn fossil fuels or use nuclear power, both of which have negative environmental impacts. Geothermal plants use natural steam or hot water from inside the Earth, creating no emissions.
