Segment Description

Between 1815 and 1920, waves of immigrants trying to escape war, poverty, discrimination and famine came to America. At different times, Italians, Irish, Chinese, and Eastern Jews surged into the country. These immigrants were processed at Ellis Island or Castle Garden, and sent off to start new lives in New York City.
