Segment Description

Fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas) are formed from the remains of living things that died millions of years ago and were gradually buried by layers of rock and soil. Fossil fuels are used to produce energy in order to generate electricity, run our cars, and heat our homes. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources. They also pollute the water and air. The burning fossil fuels causes acid rain, smog, and the greenhouse effect. The United States consumes 25 percent of all the energy used in the world. Laws have been passed to force industries and car manufacturers to reduce the amount of pollution released into the atmosphere.
